Site History

In 1925, the 56th Brigade of the Texas National Guard was organized and used Rock-Creek-Mineral Wells land as a field headquarters and training area. In 1940, U.S. Government purchased approximately 23,000 acres, including the National Guard training area, in Palo Pinto and Parker Counties for an Army Infantry training facility. The site was used first by the U.S. Army during 1951-1956 and then by the U.S. Air Force during 1956-1974.

In 1974 the camp was deactivated and much of the property and facilities were used in the development of Weatherford College and Lake Mineral Wells State Park. The major portion of the former Camp Wolters has been returned to ranching, agricultural, light industrial, commercial and residential use. The Texas National Guard has retained approximately 4,000 acres for use as a headquarters and maneuver area.
